The phrase “estate planning” encompasses a wide variety of tools and techniques designed to reduce or eliminate the costs of transferring a person’s wealth at death to the next generation, and making the entire process smooth and efficient.
One of the most important documents used in Estate Planning is the Health Care Proxy (HCP). The HCP is a legal document wherein one person appoints another (called the “Agent”) to make medical decisions when (and only when) you cannot do so. The Health Care Proxy gives your Agent legal authority to make any health care decision which you could have made if you were able to decide for yourself. However, your Agent can only make decisions about artificial nutrition and hydration if he or she knows your wishes from what you have told them, or what you have written in the Health Care Proxy.
